Smiley Guy Studios (SGS) is an award-winning full-service production
company with expertise in animation, design, writing, sound, music,
and multi-media.
Smiley
Guy Studios was literally born and raised in a barn. In 1997,
t he founding members of SGS attended Norman Jewison's Canadian
Film Centre, where they were among the first residents of the New
Media Design Programme (located in Secretariat's former stable on
the EP Taylor estate). They came from varied backgrounds but converged
creatively and decided to explore the narrative possibilities of
new media.
Smiley Guy Studios was conceived – and with
it The Seen: A Night in the Life of Blake Dinken, a simple tale
of one man's night out that was told using a multitude of media.
Ultimately, Blake Dinken would become Jack Ryder, while The Seen
would morph into Odd Job Jack. But that would take some time…
Upon graduation, the Guys decided to stick together
and build up the business. Smiley Guy Services made new and old
media for clients such as CTV / The Comedy Network, S&S, Alliance
Atlantis, Molson Coors, AOL, Ford, Kellogg, Leo Burnett, J. Walter
Thompson, and Warner Bros. The services division produces animated
shows, shorts, games, greeting cards, promotional e-mails, multimedia
projects, movie trailers and music videos.
Meanwhile, The Seen now known as Odd Job Jack –
went through many stages of development. It began as a broadband
"experience," but since (in 1997) no one had broadband
yet, no one could experience it. It was soon re-made into a "mid-band"
website. It was at that point that The Comedy Network entered the
picture and urged the Smiley Guys to adapt the show into a television
program with a significant web component. The Smiley Guys accepted
the challenge. When the new media industry imploded a month later,
the jump seemed prescient…
